Chapter 5: Adding Media to Entertainment

When you think of entertainment, what do you think?

You’re probably thinking about your favorite television shows, movies and music to listen to.

Now, lets narrow your thought process down just a little bit. Think about entertainment in the form of social media. giphy

First thing that comes to your mind is most likely Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook or YouTube.

These forms of social media have impacted the way that the entertainment industry has down mostly everything, yet nearly nobody has realize exactly how much it has been changed. Over the years social media has helped and harmed the industry when it comes to promoting different forms of entertainment or sharing/retweeting falsely accused rumors regarding the people involved in entertainment.

It just takes a couple seconds to view something within these social media sites and share them around the world.

Social media has benefitted the entertainment industry using its fast pace spread of information as well as the creativity it will be using to go about the spread – allowing different types of connections to be made. Many of the social media sites are used to promote premier dates, times, etc for their audience to be up-to-date.

Youtube provides the audiences with behind the scene clips, previews and trailers regarding tv shows, movies, documentaries, Beneath each video or posting there is a section that allows the audience to share their opinion of what is coming and provide informative feedback whether they enjoyed it or not. Pollster Jon Penn mentions that, “Social media is the connective tissue that enables consumers to multitask during their entertainment experiences by connecting with others and sharing their opinions.” (Solis). Whether these responses be completely honest or not, they are seen and shared throughout sites.

But that’s the catch, the responses that are posted on social media might be dishonest leaving the entertainers with nothing to work with. Not only will the responses be ineffective toward the entertainers but they can possibly affect others in a disrespectful manner. Users tend to hide behind their usernames while believing that they are not physically hurting anyone because they are not communicating face-to-face. Yet many comments can be disgusting and degrading. Popular celebrities have cut their life on social media short to escape from the negativity. For example, the popular singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran decided to call it quits for a little while on social media, emails, etc because of the specific feedback that he was receiving.

Ian J. Stark states that, “Sheeran has since announced (in July 2017) that he has stopped reading tweets from other people due to negativity– but still posts to Instagram, and that feed forwards to, and is currently populating, his Twitter account” (Stark).
